Losing a loved one can be tough, and while nothing can ever fill the void they left behind, surrounding yourself with a good support system full of friends can help give you strength when you're going through a hard time.

For Linda Evans, her support system after her mother died was her fellow castmates on The Big Valley, including costar Barbara Stanwyck. Stanwyck was well-loved by both cast and crew alike, who took to calling her "Missy" while on set of The Big Valley.

In an interview with The Cincinnati Enquirer, Evans reported that Stanwyck was instrumental during an incredibly difficult time in her life after the death of her mother.

"My mother passed away and Missy knew what I was going through," Evans said. "One day we were sitting there and we weren't talking about it but suddenly she turned and looked at me for a long time and finally she said, 'Well, I guess I'll have to be your mom from now on.' And she has been."

Not only did Stanwyck serve as a maternal figure to Evans, but with her extensive film career, Evans also looked up to Stanwyck as a role model.

In an interview with The Kansas City Star, Stanwyck described shifting focus from film to television, noting that the transition was fairly easy.

"I see no difference in television," she said. "It's the same as movies, only it's faster."

With her steely resolve and endless supply of confidence, it's no wonder that Stanwyck was cast to play tough-as-nails Barkley matriarch, Victoria. Stanwyck understood that you can still be tender and strong at the same time.

Even before she appeared on The Big Valley, Stanwyck herself admired the American settlers of decades past for their strength. "I like them because they were so vital," Stanwyck said. "I'm fascinated by early American history. They must have been a hell of a bunch of guys and dames."

Stanwyck was one of the original strong television matriarchs. Evidently, she was a good person with a big heart.
