How many actors are lucky enough to play one iconic character in their careers? That's rarified air. The list becomes even shorter when you extend the number of career-defining characters to two. Playing two recognizable, yet totally distinct, roles throughout an actor's life is hard to do. Actors have to leap over so many hurdles, evading typecasting and refusing to be pigeonholed as one specific character.

One such actor who has two quintessential TV roles is Harry Morgan. When Dragnet was rebooted for a new audience in 1967, series stalwart Joe Friday was joined by the partner who would grow to help most define the show, Officer Bill Gannon, played by Morgan. So palpable was their chemistry that most folks forget Friday even had other partners before Harry Morgan joined the cast.

In the following decade, Morgan would appear on M*A*S*H, first in a one-off arc as Major General Bartford Steele, before joining the cast full-time as Colonel Sherman T. Potter.
